Course Synopsis and Requirements


Bronze Medallion


Cert II in Public Safety - $110

The Bronze Medallion is a challenging award, which provides surf lifesavers with the knowledge and skills to be able to participate in beach patrols or supervise groups of people in the open water environment. The practical and theoretical sections of the award are designed to test a person's competency in surf awareness, survival, patrol and rescue procedures, radio operations, emergency care plus anatomy and physiology. A candidates physical fitness is tested by a 200m run- 200m swim- 200m run completed in under eight minutes; a 400m pool swim to be completed in under nine minutes; simulated rescues using a rescue board and tube. All these skills combine to train candidates to be an effective member of a patrol team tasked with providing a safe beach and aquatic environment.

To enter the Bronze course you must have met the following course pre-requisites.

  • Be a minimum of 15 years old on the date of final assessment.
  • Have completed a 400 metre swim in nine minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres or over a measured open water course before any training starts in the surf and/or deep water.

 

SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) - $55

 

On successful completion of this assessment, candidates will have achieved the SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate.

To enter the SRC course you must have met the following course pre-requisites.

· Be a minimum of 13 years old on the date of the final assessment..

· Have completed a 200 metre swim in five minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course before any training commences in the surf and / or deep water.


Apply First Aid (HLTFA301B) - $30

 

This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge for a person to provide first aid in an emergency situation. This course aims to provide the first aider with attitude, knowledge and skill required to effectively deal with a range of first aid situations.

The course provides participants with knowledge, practical experience and assessment on: OH&S legislation, documentation, hazard identification, legal liabilities, anatomy and physiology, as well as management and treatment for a range of injuries and illnesses.

To enter the Apply First Aid course you must have met the following course pre-requisites:

  • Minimum of 14 years of age on the date of final assessment.

ARTC (Advanced Resuscitation Techniques


Certificate) - $15

 

The aim of the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate course is to develop your skills and knowledge to use automated external defibrillators, suction, airway management devices and oxygen during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious breathing casualties. You will also develop knowledge and skills to enable you to demonstrate competence in the nationally recognised unit of competency:

  • HLTFA404A Apply advanced resuscitation techniques.

To commence training for the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate you must meet the following course pre-requisites:

  • Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Hold one of the SLSA awards shown in the table below; AND
  • Hold an award (one) in Apply First Aid, CPR, Basic Emergency Life Support or Resuscitation Certificate.

IRB Driver - $30

 

The aim of this course is to help you develop knowledge and skills to safely and effectively drive an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB). This course leads to the SLSA Award Silver Medallion IRB Driver. You will also develop knowledge and skills to enable you to demonstrate competence in the nationally recognised unit of competency:

  • PUASAR014A Operate and maintain a small powercraft and motor for rescue operations.

This unit forms a part of the nationally recognised PUA31310 Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue).

To enter the Silver Medallion (IRB Driver), you must have met the following course pre-requisites:

  • Minimum of 16 years of age to commence training.
  • Minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Hold and be currently proficient in the SLSA Bronze Medallion and IRB Crew Awards.
  • Have met the Marine Licensing requirements for Queensland.

 

IRB Crew - $30

 

The aim of this course is to help you develop skills and knowledge to effectively participate as crew in rescues using an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB).

To enter the IRB Crew Certificate course you must have met the following course pre-requisites:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Hold the SLSA Bronze Medallion Award.

 

CPR

 

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) delivers the essential knowledge, skills and competencies to maintain breathing and circulation in any emergency situation on adults, children and infants.

To enter the CPR course you must have met the following course pre-requisites:

  • Minimum of 10 years of age on the date of final assessment.

 

ATV (All Terrain Vehicle)

 

The aim of this course is to help you develop the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). The course involves a number of incorporated practical activities to develop your operating skills. To ensure the safety of operators and bystanders, you are required to successfully perform each practical task before being permitted to continue on to the next activity. This course leads to the SLSA Award ATV Operator Certificate. The ATV Operator Certificate is not aligned to any nationally recognised units of competency.

To commence training for the ATV Operator Certificate you must meet the following course pre-requisites:

  • Be at least 17 years of age to commence training.
  • Hold a SLSA award.
  • Hold a valid Driver’s License (Provisional or Open) for the State/Territory in which operations will occur (some restrictions may apply to towing loads for Provisional Drivers – seek confirmation from the State/Territory road transport authority).

 

Tractor (SLSQ Tractor Operator Induction)

 

The aim of this course is to help you develop the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate a Tractor. The course involves a number of incorporated practical activities to develop your operating skills. To ensure the safety of operators and bystanders, you are required to successfully perform each practical task before being permitted to continue on to the next activity. This course leads to the SLSA Award Tractor Operator Induction. The Tractor Operator Induction is not aligned to any nationally recognised units of competency.

To commence training for the ATV Operator Certificate you must meet the following course pre-requisites:

  • Be at least 17 years of age to commence training.
  • Hold a valid Driver’s License (Provisional or Open) for the State/Territory in which operations will occur (some restrictions may apply to towing loads for Provisional Drivers – seek confirmation from the State/Territory road transport authority).

 



Surf Camp 2012

The Annual Surf Camp will be on over the first week of the September School Holidays from Sunday 23rd September to Friday 28th September.  This is a great opportunity for all Under 14’s to complete the SRC and First Year Under 17’s to complete their Bronze Medallion. Nipper parents keen to complete the Bronze Course are also more than welcome to attend.

The cost of the Surf Camp is $120, which includes lunch and morning tea.

Anyone wishing to participate in the camp is required to complete the attached Surf Camp 2012 form and attendees under 18 must also have their parent or guardian complete the Parental Consent Form.

Places are strictly limited and we cannot reserve your spot without payment so please ensure to return the form either with the credit card details filled out or proof of the electronic banking transaction. Cash payments can be taken during office hours only.

All Surf Camp participants must be financial members so please ensure, if you have not returned your Membership Renewal, that you return these with the Surf Camp forms.

Proficiency Resources now available

The 2012-2013 season is upon us and proficiency resources for the season are now available!

You have the option to complete an online proficiency theory assessment.  Members completing the online theory assessment do not need to complete the paper based theory paper. Please click the attached link for further information. http://www.lifesaving.com.au/default.asp?contentID=898

Remember you must complete your proficiency at one of our Club dates and if you do not complete your proficiency by December 31st you will be ineligible to continue patrolling, competing or taking part in any other Club activity involving surf practical components.
