The Nipper season commences on Sunday 23rd of September with our sign on days the 9th and 16th of September. We are looking forward to another fun filled season building on the success from last season. From u/6 to u/14’s our goal is to educate the Nippers how to be safe at the beach. Each age group learns more as they get older, with the younger ones learning the importance of swimming between the flags and fun at the beach. As they get older they are introduced to beach and water skills until the last season where our under 14’s complete the Surf Rescue Certificate which allows them to become a Patrolling member under the guidance of our senior Patrol members.
Last season we had many Sunday fun days, great carnivals and competitions as well as functions with Kellie Huth who did an outstanding job as Surf Girl for 2011-2012. Nippers is always a fun way to stay safe and learn beach and surf skills that can transform kids into patrolling lifesavers. One of our Nipper Captains, who had completed her Surf Rescue Certificate and started patrols last year, put these skills to good practise in a rescue last season. What was so special about the rescue was that Rachel left a carnival race and knew helping the person to shore was much more important than competing. This shows our Nipper program is on the right track, providing the skills and knowledge to keep the beach safe and provide the future with patrolling Lifesavers.
Our coaching this season takes on a new and exciting change with a new water coach. Nick Marshall will take over this season and is looking forward as we are, to the season ahead. Nick is taking over a healthy competitive team and while keeping some things the same he will bring his own style to the coaching. Dennis Griffith, our beach coach will also return, with a heavy emphasis on baton changes this season. Alan Bugeja, Nev and Anita Huth our highly successful march past crew are looking for more competitors, if you want to win a medal at State this is the team to be in. John Taylor, Kerri-Lyn French and Peter Fleming are looking for R&R and Champion Lifesaver competitors, as these two disciplines have had a successful history at Burleigh.
To the parents, there is no other sport that you can get in and participate with your children, while having fun at the same time. To be a successful club we need your involvement as a parent but more importantly your children would love it when you get in the water or are on the beach with them. I hope to see all the families from last season return and some new ones arrive this coming season. Come and check out our great clubhouse with all its facilities. The Nippers have access to all the club facilities and we provide coaching in a safe learning environment for all ages.
If you have any questions at any time please enquire from any of our Age Group Leaders or Junior Committee Members, they will help you get involved.
